[Review] Motorola MotoACTV Golf GPS Watch Turns Your Arm into Your Caddie

New this April 2012, the Buba Watson and Motorola MotoACTV Golf GPS watch looks to combine the simplicity of watches with the technology of the pocket held GPS devices.

Personally I think this is the next generation of golf gps watches and the competition will have to step up their game.

Having just purchased a Garmin S1 I was intrigued to find out more about the newly launched Motorola MotoACTV Golf GPS watch. I’m intrigued by the new technology and also by what I might have missed out on.

Until recently the MotoACTV watch was designed for activity tracking for over 40 different spots and exercises EXCEPT golf. Now we know why — they had their eyes on the golf market.

The android powered, MotoACTV golf edition watch is endorsed by Buba Watson who jokes about eliminating your caddie and the fact it don’t talk back! Or for those of us who don’t have a caddie, now you do!

My Garmin is a quality piece of kit and I’ve fallen in love with it. I’ve never been a great judge of distance and frequently over hit shots when I’m close to the green and come up short when I’m in the middle of the fairway. I love the fact that you don’t have to fumble around in your pocket to get out a GPS — you just look at your wrist — and you don’t have to worry about losing your rangefinder on the course. I’m forgetful too.

While my Garmin is a quality piece of kit it does lack many of the features an extra $100 gets you with the Motorola.

Now I don’t care about the MP3 player in the ACTV golf edition and I don’t care about taking calls or texts (because rumor has it the ACTV golf edition syncs with your phone) but I do like what it does with hazards, I do like the fact it tells you the club to use and I do like the post game analysis.

For many GPS devices this is simply sharing your scores and comparing them with friends. The Motorola syncs your rounds online so you can watch and visualize all the shots on each hole to study your round.

The satellite images look very clear and very helpful for improving your game and improving your next round. Plus you have the added advantage of checking out the pro’s did! Apparently Buba Watson himself and other golf pros will be posting their rounds from around the world. It will be interesting to compare rounds with pro’s who’ve played the same course.

The fitness fanatics among you the watch can be used for wider range of sports. Tracking heart rate, pace, distance, calories burned — it can be used for running, cycling on treadmills or elliptical trainers to monitor your progress.

Of you can use it make sure you don’t get lost next time the wife or girlfriend makes you go shopping as punishment for playing an extra-round.

MotoACTV Golf GPS Watch Edition Summary

It’s brand new, it needs time to settle into the market but from the outside the MotoACTV Golf looks a real winner.

The only downside is the watch is yet to be fully ‘field’ tested.  Garmin are the daddies of GPS and have been making watches for athletes in various disciplines for many years — will the Motorola hold up and live up to the high expectation?  Given their place in the phone market, I hope so.

Priced at a hefty $299 it is pushing the price of laser range finders and despite costing $100 more than the Garmin S1 my gut feeling is that this is the next generation, Golf GPS watch, with much more added to it.

More than just distance to the front, middle and back of the green the extra features with distances to hazards and the club to go over the hazard are a key advantage.

The 10 hour battery life is already 2 hours longer than the S1 which lacks the ability to monitor your shots.

As Buba Watson says in the video “you only hit 5 good shots a round and the others are mistakes”. Picking the right club and swinging it with confidence is 90% of the hard work straight away.

For those who like to share their score on Facebook, you can, but personally the best thing about the post-game analysis this watch provides… is trying to play the bad holes better next time.

Looks a cracking watch, lets see how the competition responds and the rival golf gps watch brands come back. That can only be a good thing for us, the consumer.
